 Functional ovarian cysts:

       follicular cyst

       corpus luteal cyst-"Rim of fire apperance"-increased vascularity surronding the mature follicle/corpus luteum.This is initially seen during day  8 of menstrual cycle and continues through day 24.It may persist through the first trimester.

Features of simple cyst(Image)
      5 cm or less       

      smooth margin    

      unilocular  

     acoustic enhancement deep to the cyst

Whether the OCP is helpful to resolve simple cyst  in premenopausal cyst is uncertain.Source:

Ovary-Tumours from surface epithelium

70-75% of ovarian neoplasms are from surface.

Serous tumours are more likely to be
Bilateral(20%) than mucinous(5%)

Ovary-Germ cell tumours

 

10-15% of ovarian tumors are germ cell origin.95% of these are benign cystic teratoma.10-15% of teratoma's are bilateral.

 

"tip of iceberg" presentation in teratoma is the  curvilinear appearance is due to acoustic shadowing from the presence of echogenic hair and calcium.

Dysgerminoma is the most common germ cell malignant tumour.
